April 1

WE ARE HOME!!!! Well, to clarify, we are at the apartment!!!! We got discharged at about 6:30pm tonight! Unexpected, but definitely welcomed.

Madelyn is drowsy, but happy to be in her own bed tonight. I explained to her that the doctors let us go home early IF we woke her up to give her medicine. She is remarkable and so, so logical (much more so than me). I swear. If you explain things to her beforehand, if you ask for her opinion (on anything she can give opinions on) then she is fine with whatever is dealt her. There are a lot of things she can decide for herself if you think about it.

Today I let her decide how to remove her band aids. She did all three herself. She said she was scared to have the bathing guard (for her port) removed, so I asked her "how do you want it removed, you tell me". She wanted to sit down and do it herself. Ok. She did it with no tears and was very proud. She walked over and showed her nurse. No, actually, she wanted to hide her handy work with her PJ top and then dramatically open it up for her to show off. Fantastic. Such a strong girl.

We got home about 7pm. She wanted to stay on the couch to rest so she could see Grandma and Grandpa when they came with a pizza dinner. Well, she couldn't stay awake. I brought her upstairs to bed about 8:30pm and woke her up for her first dose at 9:15pm with no problems. I asked her how she was feeling and she said "well, my belly hurts a bit, but I think it is just tired." Sweet girl. I will have to wake her up at 10:30pm and again at 3:30am. We have staggered doses of Benadryl, Claritin and Zantac to give her for the next three days. We have medicines to give her at 3:30am, 9am (four different meds), 12noon, 2pm, 7pm, 9pm and midnight tomorrow. I already have huge respect for nurses; well, tonight I want to do a "thank you" dance to them. They have to keep track of several patients at once. Last night, I got to sleep while they did these doses. Tonight I am the nurse. Tomorrow, if you a know a nurse, give them a big ol' sloppy, wet kiss from me.

  1. Actually Karolyn said: There is no word to describe you Lisa and your family. I read and absorb each and every days post and want you to know there are many many people out there on this journey with you and we hope you feel our hugs and love

  2. Woohoo! Glad you're "home" and holy cow, surprised at how long you have to keep up the anti-histamines, but after that big scare, guess it's comforting, too.
